Blunt and Brutal: Cowboys Coach Explains Why Rookie Is Riding the Bench

The Dallas Cowboys have struggled to find stability in their backfield ever since Ezekiel Elliott’s production began to decline. Elliott last eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in 2021 and is now out of the NFL entirely.

In the three offseasons since, the Cowboys have searched for an answer. Aside from Tony Pollard’s 1,000-yard campaign in 2023, the running game has lacked consistency and excitement.

This year, Dallas added rookie Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft known for his blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash. Hopes were high that he could bring some spark, but he was listed among the team’s seven inactives for Week 1.

Why was he sidelined? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer explained that Blue simply isn’t ready. While acknowledging the rookie’s athleticism and upside, Schottenheimer pointed to maturity and consistency as areas that need improvement.

“He’s extremely talented,” Schottenheimer said. “But in this league, you have to show up and compete every single day. If you look sharp on Wednesday but take a step back on Thursday, that gets noticed. On a roster this deep, you have to earn every opportunity.”

Schottenheimer emphasized that young players like Blue must prove themselves in practice before earning playing time. Week 2 could bring a different outcome, but it depends on the rookie’s progress.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys’ Week 1 rushing attack was mixed. Javonte Williams managed 54 yards and two touchdowns but averaged just 3.6 yards per carry on 15 attempts. Miles Sanders was more efficient, picking up 53 yards on only four carries, though he did lose a fumble.

If Williams continues to struggle and Sanders remains inconsistent, Blue could eventually get his shot at live game reps—provided he convinces the coaching staff he’s ready.
