Darryl Sutter may not be the most talkative coach in NHL history, but he might be one of the most effective.
With his no-nonsense demeanor and dry wit, Sutter led the Los Angeles Kings to two Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014. His coaching philosophy emphasized discipline, tight defensive play, and grinding down opponents—perfect for the playoff grind.
While some players found his style difficult, others thrived. Under Sutter, Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, and Jonathan Quick all elevated their games to championship levels. His ability to get the most out of his roster, despite a stoic exterior, became part of his mystique.
Sutter returned to the NHL coaching ranks with the Calgary Flames in 2021 and led them to a Pacific Division title the next year—proof that his system, though old-school, still works in today’s fast-paced game.
He’s not flashy. He’s not loud. But he wins.
