Scoring a goal as a goalie is rare. Getting a shutout is elite. Doing both in one game? That’s Damian Rhodes territory.
On January 2, 1999, Ottawa Senators goaltender Damian Rhodes made NHL history against the New Jersey Devils. Early in the game, a delayed penalty caused Devils goalie Martin Brodeur to leave the ice for an extra attacker. But a miscommunication led to a bizarre own-goal—and since Rhodes was the last Senator to touch the puck, he was credited with the goal.
But that wasn’t the end of his night. Rhodes stopped all 30 shots he faced, earning a shutout along with the goal.
No other goalie in NHL history has ever recorded both feats in the same game.
Rhodes had a solid NHL career with over 250 games played between Toronto, Ottawa, and Atlanta. While he never reached the heights of Marty Brodeur or Patrick Roy, this one surreal night guaranteed his place in the record books forever.
