When the New York Liberty entered the 2023 season, the whispers were loud: “Can a superteam work in the WNBA?” After a blockbuster offseason that saw the franchise add former MVPs Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, along with elite point guard Courtney Vandersloot, fans and critics alike questioned whether too much star power could actually backfire.
The answer? A resounding no.
Under the leadership of head coach Sandy Brondello, the Liberty finished with a 32–8 regular-season record, tying the league’s all-time best. The team dominated offensively, with Stewart averaging 23 points per game, Ionescu setting a new record with 121 made three-pointers, and Vandersloot dishing out assists like clockwork.
But it wasn’t just the wins. The Liberty shattered attendance records at Barclays Center, sold out home games for the first time in a decade, and created a surge in WNBA social media engagement. The 2023 WNBA Finals between the Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces drew the highest TV viewership for a Finals series since 2003.
Although New York fell short in the Finals, losing to the red-hot Aces, they sent a message: the Liberty are no longer underdogs—they’re a powerhouse. With most of their core locked in for multiple seasons, the question is no longer whether this superteam will work—it’s how many championships they’ll win.
